ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Kashmir Chowk Underpass on Thursday, a project completed in 27 days. He described the pace as a “mini miracle” and said the work was needed ahead of next year’s SCO conference, which will bring many foreign dignitaries to the capital.
The underpass is 500 metres long and is part of a four-kilometre road. It also includes monuments highlighting Kashmir and the planting of thousands of trees. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said 6,340 new trees were planted and that a third party supervised the quality of work.
The project cost Rs1.4 billion, down from an initial estimate of Rs1.6 billion, and the prime minister said the contract was awarded transparently. Habib Construction Services carried out the work alongside CDA teams.
Under the new arrangement, traffic coming from the Faizabad side passes over the underpass, while vehicles travelling from Serena towards Faizabad use it. According to the CDA, the junction handled about 107,000 vehicles before construction and often faced congestion and delays, particularly during VIP movements and peak hours.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Naqvi said Islamabad would look new before the SCO conference. He said work on a safari park in Malpur would begin in January and that he would request the prime minister to perform the groundbreaking of the Islamabad Cricket Stadium next week. He added that a Suparco report on the city’s greenery would be shared with the prime minister.
Mr Sharif said the pace of this project suggested that other SCO-related initiatives would also be completed soon.
